What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal (also spelled Rahu Kalam) is a daily inauspicious window of approximately 90 minutes, observed for thousands of years across the Indian subcontinent. The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal parts; one specific part is ruled by Rahu and traditionally avoided for starting any new venture — signing contracts, beginning a journey, marriage muhurta, opening a shop, or any auspicious ceremony. Yamaganda Kaal and Gulika Kaal are two related daily inauspicious periods on the same logic but with different planetary rulers (Yama and Mandi/Gulika).

What to avoid during Rahu Kaal

  • Starting a new business, signing contracts, or making major financial decisions
  • Beginning a new journey or relocating
  • Marriage ceremonies, engagement, or fixing wedding dates
  • Inaugurating a shop, office, or new property
  • Buying gold, vehicles, or initiating large purchases
  • Beginning auspicious religious ceremonies (havan, puja for new objectives)
